September 23, 2024

A five-month-old baby has been found after an urgent appeal was launched to locate her in Dublin following a car hijacking.

Police received a report of a hijacking of a vehicle - a silver Nissan Qashqai hatchback - from Mountjoy Square, in Dublin at approximately 1.50pm.

Officers said the car "was hijacked by a man who is not known to the baby or her family" and that the baby was in the car when it was taken.

Police later said the five-month-old - wearing a pink cardigan and ugg boots - had been located.

They said on social media at 4.34pm the baby was "located safe and well in Dublin City Centre".

Superintendent Liam Geraghty said she was missing from her parents for "just over two hours".

He said it was "obviously a very traumatic time" for the mother and father but added: "Thankfully, they were all reunited together shortly after 4pm."

Mr Geraghty added the suspect is a "white, middle-aged male wearing dark clothing and a baseball cap".

Police currently believe the incident appears to have been an opportunistic crime, pending further investigation.

The force added it had initiated a Child Rescue Ireland (CRI) Alert over the incident. It has since been cancelled.
