Two supported living developments in Hornsea are to be completely refurbished to ensure they are offering energy-efficient modern accommodation for residents.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has awarded Hobson and Porter a £4.26m contract to entirely refurbish the interiors of the properties.

The properties will provide modern flats that meet the council’s need for suitable supported housing.

The works on the two buildings have been awarded as a single contract to run sequentially to maximise economies of scale and continuity of labour between the two buildings.

Meregarth, a two-storey building erected in the 1970’s which currently consists of 14 bedsits, five one-bed flats and one maisonette, will be refurbished to deliver 14, one-bedroom flats.

Pybus Court currently consists of 12 bedsits, three one-bed flats, and three maisonettes and was erected in the 1980’s. Once refurbished, Pybus Court will have 11, one-bedroom flats and two, two-bedroom flats.

At both properties the following have been incorporated into the design to give the building a more modern feel whilst making them fit for purpose moving forward.

  • Energy efficient design and thermal upgrades to the building lowering energy cost for residents
  • High level of sound insulation between flats
  • Robust and modern internal finishes
  • Compliance with all current regulations
  • Superfast fibre optic broadband
  • Refresh external spaces

Councillor Gary McMaster, the council’s portfolio holder for housing and infrastructure, said: ‘’These much-needed housing developments will ensure that the people utilising this supported accommodation are placed within an appropriate environment, suited to their needs.

‘’Both Meregarth and Pybus Court [will] feature modern infrastructure and technology, ensuring that the developments are not only fit for purpose, but they are also future proof, guaranteeing the most efficient and cost-effective use of resources.’’

For the duration of the refurbishments, residents have been informed that they will be moved into alternative accommodation close by.

The project has been programmed to start in September 2024. A projected completion date for Meregarth is the end of February 2025, with Pybus starting in March 2025, aiming for completion in August 2025.
